A Joint Meeting of Working Groups Created within the Pilot Project “Promoting the Use of Community Service in Georgia”

Penal Reform International (PRI) is organizing a joint meeting of the Working Groups that were created within the project ‘Promoting the Use of Community Service in Georgia’. The project is being implemented by PRI, with the financial support from the Norwegian Mission of Rule of Law Advisers to Georgia (NORLAG).

The representatives from the Prosecutor’s Office, courts, local governmental and self-governmental bodies, Regional Probation Bureaus, Legal Aid Service, as well as the representatives from non-governmental sector and organizations Penal Reform International (PRI) and Norwegian Mission of Rule of Law Advisers to Georgia (NORLAG) will participate in the working groups.

On the joint meeting of the Community Service Working Groups, a representative of PRI will make a presentation about the activities carried out in the framework of the pilot project ‘Promoting the Use of Community Service in Georgia’ and the work carried out by the working groups created within the project. Presentations will also be made by the representatives from the National Probation Service and NORLAG. In particular, NORLAG will make a brief evaluation of the work done within the project and possible future plans. The Heads of Tbilisi and Kutaisi Probation Bureaus will present information about the existing situation and the statistical data in regards to the use of community service. The meeting will be attended by the members of Tbilisi and Kutaisi Community Service Working Groups, who will share the best practice of the work carried out within the working groups. Future potential plans will also be explored during the working meeting.

PRI believes that community service as an alternative to imprisonment has been underestimated in Georgia. The establishment of effective practice and promotion of wider use of the community service would help to challenge prison overcrowding. PRI aims at promotion of the use and effective implementation of alternatives to imprisonment in South Caucasus region.
