PRI urges the Public Defender to turn his promises into reality

Penal Reform International and local non governmental organisations are holding a two-day conference in Tbilisi on the prevention of torture in the South Caucasus, 1-2 October. The conference comes just days after George Tugushi, Public Defender of Georgia stated that a torture prevention group comprising experts and non governmental organisations would monitor places of detention.

Community Service Working Group Meeting in Tbilisi (9 October)

In Support of a Stronger Mechanism to Prevent Torture (Conference Day II)

Today at 10.00 starts the second day of a two-day Conference “Prevention of Torture: what does it mean and how well do we do it in South Caucasus?” organized by Penal Reform International (PRI) under the support of EC. Conference has a particular focus on Georgia in light of the recent designation of the Public Defender of Georgia as a National Preventive Mechanism (NPM) according to the Optional Protocol to the UN Convention against Torture.

Opening of the Rehabilitation Centre for Juvenile Offenders (24 September)

KUTAISI. 24 September. 2009. The rehabilitative centre to support young probationers is being officially launched in Kutaisi, Georgia. The Kutaisi centre, set up in April this year, is one of the three piloted rehabilitation schemes established within the framework of UNICEF/Government of Georgia cooperation project supported by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Based in Tbilisi, Georgia, the Regional Director has responsibility for managing PRI’s programmes in the South Caucasus Region. The Director is a member of the management team for PRI and as such will contribute to the organisation’s overall strategic development and implement PRI’s aims and objectives regionally.

Training/Workshop for Rehabilitative Scheme Staff in Tbilisi (24 August - 1 September)

24 August – 1 September, 2009. Tbilisi, Georgia. A joint workshop will be facilitated for Rustavi, Batumi and Kutaisi rehabilitative scheme team managers in cooperation with PRI and UNCIEF to build the capacity of the teams to develop ideas for the future development of the projects. The workshop will be led by Geoff Wright, Social Work Consultant invited from the Children’s Legal Centre (CLC), University of Essex, UK.

Local Coordination Council (LCC) Meeting in Kutaisi (19 August 09)

19 August 2009. Kutaisi, Georgia. The regular Local Coordination Council (LCC) meeting will be held on the 19th of August at PRI Kutaisi Office (78 Tamar Mepe Street) in the frame of the project “Establishing Rehabilitative Schemes for Juvenile Offenders in Georgia”. The project is funded by the Government of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in partnership with UNICEF and is being implemented by PRI.
