Presentation "Causing Factors of Juvenile Offenses"
10 February, 2010. The meeting will be held in Rustavi Rehabilitation Center in the framework of the project “Establishing Rehabilitative Schemes for Juvenile Offenders in Georgia”. The juvenile probationers, participating in the project, will present the results of the research regarding the causing factors of offense among juveniles.

Working Meeting within “Small Grants Initiative” (16.12.09)
A working meeting is organized by Penal Reform International (PRI) in the framework of the project ’Small Grants Initiative’. The project is sponsored by Norwegian Mission of Rule of Law Advisers to Georgia (NORLAG) and is being implemented by PRI.
PROJECTS

Global Action to Abolish the Death Penalty

This is a global project covering activity in three regions: Middle East and North Africa, Eastern Europe and South Caucasus and Central Asia. This is a two-year EC funded project.

The Global project objective is challenging the Death Penalty where it exists or the use of life imprisonment as a standard alternative, also the program will strive to provide global expertise on the problems of using Life Imprisonment as a standard alternative to the Death Penalty, where it has been abolished or there is a moratorium.

Prevention of Torture in Georgia 

Since February 2007, PRI has been implementing an EU-funded project “Prevention of Torture in Georgia” together with its partners. The duration of the project is 3 years.

Overall objective of the project: raise awareness of, and support effective implementation of OPCAT in Georgia as a means of strengthening and institutionalising measures to prevent torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, and of addressing features (eg gaps in legislation, regulations, practices, lack of information on typology of victims), that make people in Georgia vulnerable to torture.

Project on Probation

Penal Reform International together with European Commission Penitentiary and Probation Reform Project (PPRP) launched a project. The aim of the project is promotion of the Georgian Probation Service and discussion of problems and perspectives related to the issue. To achieve these goals PRI is holding round table conferences in different regions of Georgia, all together 10 of these kind of meetings are planned.

At the round table conferences representatives of local probation bureau attend, as well as local regional courts, prosecutor’s office, police, representatives of local NGOs, mass media and etc.

Prison Overcrowding

The purpose of the project is to research the causes and adverse effects of overcrowding in Georgian prisons, to seek solutions through informed debates and discussions around the issue involving civil society and government bodies, to influence legislation. Public awareness, including among judges and government, will be raised as to the social costs of imprisonment and value of alternative measures; The project will bring about better understanding of the causes and extent of prison overcrowding, hopefully reducing counter-productive legislative and other initiatives;

Small Grants Initiative, Phase II by Norlag and PRI

Activities-Kutaisi-Prison (Mothers and Children’s Defence League)
The project includes activities for psycho-social rehabilitation of Convicted Prisoners at the Prison and Strict Regime Establishment # 2 in Kutaisi encompassing civil education of convicted prisoners, assistance to the integration of ethnic minorities, and facilitating contact with the outside world. The project will also target awareness-raising of prisoners in health issues as well as organizing various sports and cultural activities for inmates.
